If you're a senior, or you know one, the city of San Diego is holding El Niño workshops with free sandbags. The Office of Emergency Services series of three covers disaster plans, "go kits" with medications and documents, and signing up for emergency alerts.
The timing isn't random. Mission Bay flooded three days in a row last week, when a Kelvin Wave turned a 7-foot high tide into an 8.5-foot one. And San Diego had more than twice the normal amount of rain for October.

Capt. Jason Shanley of the Office of Emergency Services says to test older sandbags to see if they still hold sand. Keep documents in a weatherproof box, he says, and pack your pet's medication too.
